چکیده
Abstract While black-box models such as neural networks have been powerful in many applications, direct physical modeling (white box) remains crucial fields where experimental data are difficult or time-consuming to obtain. Here, we demonstrate with an example from desalination by capacitive deionization (CDI), how existing model could be strengthened combining a general framework insights (gray box). Thus, dynamic Langmuir (DL) is extended linear-state-space DL (LDL). Results obtained show the new LDL incorporate structural and operational modes, including membrane CDI constant-current operation. The formulation removes need for measurements of detailed device properties without adding complexity, MATLAB code automatically implementing provided Supplementary Information. We conclude widely applicable, offering great flexibility calibration data, enabling prediction over operating modes.

A Comparative Study between Membrane Capacitive Deionization and Capacitive Deionization from Isotherms and Kinetics
Membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) is a promising technique to achieve the desalination. This novel technique can largely improve the desalination efficiency of capacitive deionization (CDI) by introducing ion-exchange membranes into CDI. This paper presents a comparative study on the electrosorptive performances of CDI and MCDI based on single walled carbon nanotubes electrodes in NaCl so...

We present a new method for fighting the state space explosion of process algebraic specifications, by performing static analysis on an intermediate format: linear process equations (LPEs). Our method consists of two steps: (1) we reconstruct the LPE’s control flow, detecting control flow parameters that were introduced by linearisation as well as those already encoded in the original specifica...
متن کاملA one-dimensional model for water desalination by flow-through electrode capacitive deionization
Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a fast-emerging water desalination technology in which a small cell voltage of ~1 V across porous carbon electrodes removes salt from feedwaters via electrosorption. In flow-through electrode (FTE) CDI cell architecture, feedwater is pumped through macropores or laser perforated channels in porous electrodes, enabling highly compact cells with parallel flow and ...
متن کاملEnergy breakdown in capacitive deionization.
We explored the energy loss mechanisms in capacitive deionization (CDI). We hypothesize that resistive and parasitic losses are two main sources of energy losses. We measured contribution from each loss mechanism in water desalination with constant current (CC) charge/discharge cycling. Resistive energy loss is expected to dominate in high current charging cases, as it increases approximately l...
متن کاملTwo-Dimensional Porous Electrode Model for Capacitive Deionization
Ion transport in porous conductive materials is of great importance in a variety of electrochemical systems including batteries and supercapacitors. We here analyze the coupling of flow and charge transport and charge capacitance in capacitive deionization (CDI). In CDI, a pair of porous carbon electrodes is employed to electrostatically retain and remove ionic species from aqueous solutions. W...
